ADVANCED VSAT INSTALLATION CERTIFICATION
GVF VSAT Installer Training Program, Level 3S with Hands On Skills Test and Supplementary Training

An instructor-led class in advanced VSAT terminal installation. This course serves as the last of the three required levels for the GVF Advanced VSAT Installer Certification. It also includes the Hands On Skills Test, which is required for all GVF VSAT installer certifications. This session shares the first day with a 3-day extended class for NetHope members, coordinated by NetHope and GVF.

What to do before you come:

  1. You must complete the Level 1 and 2 courses online before coming to the classroom/practical session. You will need a solid understanding of the fundamentals topics covered in Level 1 and 2 in order to productively participate in the classroom and hands-on sessions.
  2. This online support course permits you to view and save the reference handbooks, and take the final certification test.
  3. Be sure to click on "Digital Library" to the lower left of the screen in order to access the handbooks!
  4. You must read the "Welcome" lesson in this course. We suggest you do that immediately so you are familiar with GVF certification requirements.
  5. When you have passed the test and your instructor has indicated that you have completed the Level 1 and 2 courses, attended the Level 3S/HOST class, and demonstrated the required hands-on skills, you will be able to view and print your GVF Advanced VSAT Installer certificate on this page.
  6. Check that your name is spelled correctly in "My Profile". Your certificate will show your name in "Last name" "First name" order.
  7. Check that your other information is correct in your profile, including whether you wish to be listed in the public GVF Certified Installers database.

What to bring (if possible):

  • Your downloaded and printed copy of the GVF VSAT Installation and Maintenance Handbook (3 volumes).
  • Laptop with working WiFi, Ethernet port, and serial port. The laptop may be used to connect to the network to review basic networking concepts, configure VSAT equipment, to take the online GVF Level 3S final exam.
  • Tools (if you have your own).
  • Analyser (if you have your own).
Agenda (tentative):
  1. GVF Level 3S Classroom session:
    1. GVF Level 1 and 2 followup question and answers.
    2. Site survey and preparation;
    3. Calculating, measuring and working with a clear line of site, azimuth, & elevation;
    4. Frequencies, local oscillators, and translation;
    5. Equipment assembly, equipment configuration and parameters;
    6. Grounding and lighting protection;
    7. Bringing up the carrier and operating the VSAT;
    8. Using a spectrum analyzer.
    9. Applying measurements and calculations and identifying the satellite and the carrier;
    10. Commissioning the service with the satellite provider;
    11. Locking the equipment and finalizing the installation;
    12. User acceptance;
  2. GVF Level 3S Hands-on skills practice. Assemble antennas; find satellite; practice peaking; practice setting cross-pol; learn and practice connector attachment.
  3. GVF Level 3S Hands On Skills Test. Student must demonstrate all skills to instructor in order to receive GVF certification.
    1. Correctly assemble an antenna and ODU
    2. Find a satellite designated by instructor
    3. Check antenna sidelobe levels
    4. Accurately peak the antenna using one of the methods in Level 2
    5. Accurately set pol using one of the methods in Level 2
    6. Correctly terminate a cable with an F connector
    7. Correctly weather seal the connector
    8. Show general workmanship and neatness
